The Wiltshire Museum in Devizes hosted a Great War Artefact Identification Day on Sunday, where people were able to find out from expects more about their items.

The day allowed the museum in Long Street to build up a more detailed picture of the war and experts Richard Broadhead, David Carson and Dan Miles were able to identify people’s medals, photos, documents and objects from the First World War and record their history.

Museum director David Dawson said: “It was a really interesting afternoon and we saw some great items including a First World War recruiting office sign which will now become part of the current exhibition.”

Another item brought in by three generations of the same family was a uniform belt covered with regimental badges.

Jo Hutchings, publicity officer at the museum, said: “The day went very well and our experts were kept busy all afternoon.

“The museum was pleased to welcome visitors of all ages with a wide assortment of artefacts, photos and family stories to tell.

“After the picture of Gordon Paget’s grandfather was shown in the nostalgia section of the Gazette last week, several other family members came forward on Sunday and we have been able to identify all the men in the photo which is on display as part of the exhibition.”
