The Christmas spirit was officially turned on in Marlborough tonight as hundreds of people turned out for the switching on of the festive lights illuminating the High Street and The Parade.

With a market, fairground rides, shops opening late and other attractions, it was fun all round.

Wet weather couldn't dampen spirits at the festive celebration.

Youngsters enjoyed meeting Santa and his elves in the grotto in the Town Hall while their parents had a drink and a mince pie.

In St Mary's Church there was singing from Ogbourne St George and St Andrew, St Katharine's, St Peter's and Preshute's for the annual school's carols event.

Carol concert organiser Nigel Kerton said: "We come here for to listen to the children singing their hearts out as only our schools can.

"Its just once a year that we get all the children together for this and I think it's wonderful."

After all the children came together for a rendition of Away in a Manger they collected their lanterns for the procession.

The youngsters followed Santa's sleigh carrying Father Christmas, mayor Marian Hannaford Dobson and  St Peter's pupil Ella Steele.

Just before the light switch on Town Crier Alfie Johnson was named as citizen of the year.
He said: "I don't deserve this. I've got more to offer yet."

After the crowd sang We Wish You a Merry Christmas and a countdown Ella Steele and Santa turned on the lights.
