MORE Wiltshire primary school pupils are achieving expected levels for reading, writing and maths, according to the latest Government figures.

Performance tables from the Department for Education, released last Thursday, show an increase in the number of 11-year-olds achieving level 4 in all three core subjects in Wiltshire.

In the reading test, 90 per cent of pupils achieved the expected level 4 and above, with 89 per cent getting this for writing.

In the maths test, 85 per cent of pupils gained level 4 or above and there was an increased proportion of pupils gaining the expected levels in reading, writing and maths together at 78 per cent; a two per cent increase on last year.

Laura Mayes, the cabinet member for children services, said: “These results underline the commitment and hard work of both pupils and schools supported by the council and I’d like to congratulate all involved.”

Even greater numbers of Wiltshire’s pupils are making expected progress in literacy and numeracy skills from age seven to the end of their primary school education at 11. In reading, 92 per cent made the expected progress, a rise of two per cent from 2013.

The proportion of pupils making expected progress in writing (94 per cent) and maths (90 per cent) rose from the 2013 figures. Nearly a quarter of pupils (24 per cent) gained the higher level 5 and above in reading, writing and maths together.
