Town councillors in Marlborough are angry that names chosen for a road next to a new care home does not have stronger local links.
Beechcroft Developments wants to name the street on the old Highways Depot in Salisbury Road either Marle-bridge Gardens or Place.
In information given to the council, Marlborough takes its name – Marlebridge or Marleberg – from the marl or chalk hills in the vicinity.
Henry III’s Statute of Marlebridge was signed at Marlborough Castle in 1267.
But Councillor Mervin Hall said: “This council regrets not being consulted earlier and would have preferred a name more closely associated with the site, referencing either the railway or St Gilbert’s Priory.”
