Landfill sites in Calne are using the latest laser technology to measure methane levels with the aim of tackling climate change.
The Environment Agency has started using a laser device that works by firing a light beam at a reflector and measuring the difference in intensity between the outgoing and returning beams to calculate methane levels and provide a figure for the average concentration of methane emissions.
Fiona Wilson from the Environment Agency said: “We review gas management at landfill sites with the aim of helping operators increase methane collection and minimise emissions of greenhouse gases.”
Methane is produced in large quantities as the rubbish deposited in landfills rots down.
