SCI-FI fanatics young and old descended on Corsham for the eighth annual family fun day on Saturday.

Dancing Daleks, K9 and the Ghostbusters car were among props from well-known fantasy films to draw a crowd of more than 1,000 to The Corsham School, which had been given an intergalactic-style makeover.

Youngsters dressed up as Luke Skywalker, Doctor Who and a variety of comic book heroes for the fancy dress competition, while the adults took inspiration from Ghostbusters and Star Wars.

A variety of sci-fi related stalls were also on offer for fans, some of whom had travelled from as far as Bridgwater and Peterborough.

Mike Collins, an artist on Doctor Who Magazine, talked fans through his work, as did Red Dwarf actor Danny John-Jules who has been a guest at the event on several occasions.

Visitors were also treated to guest appearances from Star Wars actors Trevor Butterfield, who played a Stormtrooper and Trandoshan bounty hunter Bossk, Mike Edmonds who was Ewok shamen Logray, Femi Taylor who played Oola, and the original Darth Vader actor Dave Prowse.

It is the second time Mr Prowse, the bodybuilder turned actor, has returned to the event to talk to fans about appearing in Return of the Jedi and The Empire Strikes Back.

The 79-year-old from Bristol said: “It's a nice homely, friendly event. We are not raced off our feet with people queuing for miles and miles, so we have time to talk to people. Hopefully I will be invited back next year.”

Speaking on the day, organiser and chairman of Charity Sci-Fi, Ady Davies, said: “The day has been quite a success. The atmosphere is electric and it’s just nice to see so many people smiling.”

After eight years running the event and raising money for local charities, Mr Davies has decided to step aside and let vice chairman Matt Sheppard and secretary Lisa Sheppard take over.

Mrs Sheppard added: “I am incredibly excited at the prospect of us, along with everyone in the group, keeping the event going.”
