FAMILY and friends of Gwen Haig packed into Calne Town Hall on Sunday to help her celebrate her 100th birthday.

Mrs Haig, of Marden Way, has lived in Calne for the past 20 years having been born in Beckhampton and growing up in Avebury and turned 100 on Tuesday.

Her tea party themed celebration saw over 100 friends and family, including one grandchild flying all the way from Australia, attend and was full of cakes, sandwiches and scones.

Her daughter, Peggy Turk, of Fynamore Gardens, said: “She was over the moon with it all, she enjoys life and she’s such a lovely lady.

“There was over 100 family and friends there which was lovely. She enjoyed every minute, she had her card from the Queen and telegram from the government on the day because we’d arranged for it to arrive in time for the party.”

Mrs Haig, a war widow, was married to William Haig who died aged just 33 whilst serving in Belgium in the Second World War.

She has two daughters, Peggy Turk and Silvia Davis and a son, John, who died aged 60 as well as six grandchildren, Sarah, Duncan, Mitchell, Diane, Stuart, Edwin and 13 great grandchildren.

Mrs Turk said: “She insists on going out for lunch every day, she likes to get out and won’t come home until five o’clock.

“She loves her flowers, she loves seeing the bluebells and the trees in blossom. She travels the garden centres; when she goes out, you can’t get her home."

Mrs Turk went on to say her mother's biggest claim to fame was catering for Princess Margaret, younger sister of Queen Elizabeth, whilst working at the Beckhampton Stables.
