Wootton Bassett Town Council will lose one of its longest serving members after next week's election.

Mayor Percy Miles has decided to call time on his career as a councillor in the town.

The 75-year-old first joined the council in 1981 and has been the town's mayor on three occasions, in 1987 and 2001, as well as this year.

Coun Miles said he had thoroughly enjoyed his time serving the town.

"I have enjoyed all of those years I have been on the council," he said.

"I am sure the council will continue to go from strength to strength, with new and enthusiastic members, whose ideas will help shape the future of the town.

"I would like to thank all of my colleagues in the council."

Voters in Wootton Bassett have a large number of candidates from which to choose at the election.

The town's eight seat north ward will be contested by 12 people, while 17 candidates have put their names forward for the eight seat south ward.

Five members of the current council will not be standing at the election.

Candidates for the north ward are made up entirely of Conservatives and Liberal Democrats. In the south ward, there are two United Kingdom Independence Party candidates, one Independent as well as Conservative and Lib Dems.
