POLICE IN Devizes are warning residents to take caution after a number of reports have been received of people knocking on doors and asking for money.
One of the people was a woman, described as white, approximately 40 years old and wearing a dark brown waist-length jacket with a hood, light blue scarf, blue jeans and brown boots, carrying a brown shoulder bag and a Lidl carrier bag.
The woman was alone, knocking on doors, and she seems to not speak English but was asking for money by handing out a piece of paper to residents. The paper said her husband had left and she had three children to look after.
Areas that have been visited include Hillworth Gardens, Kingsley Gardens, Forty Acres Road and Pans Lane.
There were other reports of a man, approximately 30 years old, of slim build, wearing a black bobble hat, black hooded jacket, blue jeans and brown boots and carrying a bag full of pictures. This man was also knocking on doors, speaking limited English, saying he was a student with no money and was attempting to sell pictures to residents in a pushy manner.
PCSO Sue Greenway said: “Please do not give these people money as by acting in this way they are breaking the law.
“Yesterday officers stopped a number of people, took their details and asked them to leave the area.”
Anyone who is approached in this way is advised not to answer the door and to call the Neighbourhood Policing team on 101.
