IT WAS a battle of the sexes as girls faced boys at a Calne charity football game to raise money for Alzheimer Support.

The match ended in a 5-5 stalemate at Calne Football Club but the girls managed to see off the boys, who had the added handicap of playing in wellington boots, after a tightly contested penalty shoot-out.

The game, sponsored by IBP Recruitment, was set up by a group of fundraising women, nicknamed Gremlin Bashers, and included a raffle and barbecue with the entire day raising around £1,200.

Tanya Whitmarsh, 32, of IBP Recruitment, said: “It was really great fun and the day was just about perfect. There was a point when all the girls just rushed on to the pitch during the game.

“It was fantastic and it was so fun and the girls played so well. In the raffle one lad entered himself for a date and that raised £100.

“However, it was only guys that were bidding for him. Luckily the weather held off and the barbecue went ahead without any problems.

"Sadly, one of the girls got injured after she sprained her ankle and was taken to hospital as a precaution but despite that it all went smoothly and we managed to raise a lot of money for such a good cause.”
