FOR the first time in its long history the PHAB sponsored wheelchair push is to take place in Hillworth Park, Devizes.

In previous years it has started and finished at the Nursteed Centre but this year Devizes Town Council is becoming involved.

The 33rd annual push and walk event will start with judging at 2.30pm on Saturday (4) and will raise money for the club's funds.

Devizes Mayor Jane Burton said: “We run great events through the park all year, which are incredibly successful. We are now being approached by local charities and community groups to run their own events in the park and the team are really pleased to be able to support these.”

The council's direct services manager hope families will turn out to support the push, take part in a tombola and buy raffle tickets.

Club chairman Faith Greenman said she hoped people would sponsor those taking part as the group needed to raise funds now more than ever as grants were under threat.

The group was formed in the 1970s to bring disabled and able bodied people together for social and fundraising events and runs a vital transport section.
