CHIPPENHAM has named the recipients of this year’s civic awards which recognise the contribution that groups and individuals make to the town.

Dick Stanger will receive one for his many years with Chippenham Folk Festival and Rob Catt for his work with Chippenham Movie Club, Wiltshire Vale Rotary Club, Probus Club, hospital radio, talking newspapers and Chippenham carnival.

“I was a bit surprised but I also felt a bit honoured when I found out,” said Mr Catt, 82, of Oaklands, who moved to Chippenham in 1968 to open the Bridge Centre as a youth and community centre.

“I think volunteering is as strong as it ever was but what we need to look at these days are where volunteers are needed.”

Ivy Wildlife Garden will also receive the award as well as Jill Gillett of the Rise Trust children’s centre.

The awards will be presented on September 4 following the annual Civic Sunday service at St Andrew’s Church.

Chippenham Mayor Terry Gibson, who will be presenting the awards, said: “Chippenham has dedicated people who make a real difference to our town through the work they do.

“These awards help recognise that work and I’m delighted that they are being formally recognised and thanked.

“Two of this year’s recipients have put in many years of hard work – Rob Catt who has worked with a large number of organisations and Dick Stanger who has been involved with the internationally renowned folk festival for four decades.

“These awards are very well deserved.”
