A concerned Calne resident has raised his concerns about the lack of public toilets ahead of the annual bike meet.

Raymond Collier has said visitors will be forced to locate toilets in shops as the town's public toilets have been shut for some time.

The 69-year-old said: "Thousands of people will come to Calne for Bike Meet and the trouble is there's no public toilets. Where are people going to go?

"When we have got a town bringing in so many people and we have no open toilets it is wrong. People have to use shop and Sainsbury's toilets but what happens when they get fed up too?

"I would like to see them back open."

Public toilets across the county have been closed while Wiltshire Council agree on a strategy to transfer the provision over to the revelevant town council's.

A Wiltshire Council spokesperson said: "At no point when the organisers informed us of the bike meet did they raise any concerns regarding the lack of public toilets.

“We agreed the transfer of the public toilets to Calne Town Council some time ago. They are now looking at the final terms and we hope to move this forward in the near future.

“Discussions with the town councils of Wiltshire over the future provision of the council’s public convenience service have been in progress since July 2015. We carried out a public consultation exercise on the future of the public convenience service in 2015 and the overwhelming response was that facilities should be offered to the town councils for them to run if they felt appropriate.

“We are also launching a Community Toilet Scheme where we are looking to work with businesses across the county to make more toilets available to the public. It is hoped the scheme will deliver longer opening hours and more convenient locations.”

A spokesperson from Calne Town Council said: "The town council has agreed in principal to the transfer of the public toilets. However, at this moment in time no documentation has been recieved from Wiltshire Council."
