A DEVIZES music promoter angry with what he sees as an increase in racism in the UK following the Brexit vote has organised a gig to promote inclusion and diversity.

Kieran Moore of Sheer Music is bringing pan-European continental jazz band WHOCAT over from Brussels to play at The Black Swan in Devizes on September 30.

Kieran said: “In the wake of Brexit there has been a spike in racially aggravated assaults across the UK, this is not the country I want to live in. So we’re engaging our community in the only way we can, by positive, inclusive, educational entertainment.

“The gig is designed to be an inclusive show, aimed at creating a welcoming atmosphere regardless of nationality, colour, religion, sexual orientation, age, gender, or any other reasons.”

Lead vocalist Sara Moonen said: “We are really looking forward to the gig, it will be our first time playing in the UK.

“We’re also playing in London and Bristol so we’re going to turn it into a mini tour, it’s going to be a lot of fun.

“We’ve never heard of Devizes, to be honest, but we’re really looking forward to visiting – we’ve been looking it up on the map and it sounds like a lovely town.

“I would say our sound creates a jazz-pop atmosphere with influences from lots of other genres including rock and world music, it’s a real alchemy of sounds.

“We are very dynamic on stage and like to interact with the audience. People who come to our gigs enjoy the fact that there’s lots going on – our show appeals to lots of different people.

“We simply love to play on stage and love the interaction with the audience.”

The band also features Joris Lindemans who plays double bass, Benoit Minon on guitar and Davy Palumbo on drums, and their sounds has been described as ‘chilly or sultry, but always compelling’.

They released their debut Blueprints EP last year and have more music lined up ready to be released soon.

Entry to the gig at the Market Place pub is free and WHOCAT start at 9pm.
