DEVIZES Food Festival has officially been given permission for free parking during next year’s event by town councillors, who have given permission for it to use of the Market Place with free parking during the annual festival in July.

The issue was discussed and passed unanimously at a recent meeting, after which deputy town clerk Simon Fisher said: “We support the free parking in the Market Place, it is no problem at all. The town council takes the view that the Market Place should be used for such events which benefit the community. We are more than happy for the free parking to take place next year.”

The town council can allocate a certain amount of free parking days in the town over the course of a year, in agreement with Wiltshire Council Highways department. Coun Phillip Whitehead, Wiltshire’s cabinet member for highways, confirmed earlier this year that the authority would be handing over the allocation of free parking days to the town council.

If the allocation is the same as 2016/17, there will be 1,686 spaces available for free use during 2017. The Food Festival permission leaves 1,615 still to be allocated. In the current year, 734 free spaces have been given, leaving a balance of 1,322 spaces.
