Runners are being urged to apply early for the Chippenham Half Marathon.

Entries are now being taken for the race, on Sunday, September 14, which is being staged for the first time after a 12 year absence.

It is being organised by the Chippenham Harriers and is ready to accept more than1000 entries.

Joint organiser Ian Wiggins has called on people to enter now.

He said: "The quicker people enter the easier it is for us. It's difficult trying to deal with how many Portaloos we need for 1000 people," he joked.

"It's all coming together now. It's going to be a big event for the town and people should apply early to avoid disappointment."

Entries are due to close three weeks before the race but could close earlier if places are taken.

Mr Wiggins also added, organising a half marathon for the first time is a challenge for the Harriers.

He said: "We have run smaller races before but, with this, we are closing the roads in the town and liasing with the police - which is all stuff we didn't realise we had to do when we started."

Chippenham Sports Club, Chippenham Town and Sheldon School are just a few who are helping accommodate runners and supplying parking around the start, on Bristol Road.

Local solicitors Gough's are the one of the main sponsors of the 13.2 mile race but the Harriers are still looking for more.

The Gazette is also helping promote the race with training plans available by following the links below.

Chairman Charlotte Watkins said: "It's going to be a great community event and we are hoping everyone in the town is going to come it and support it.

"Hopefully we can get a few more sponsors on board."

Runners can enter online at www.chippenhamhalfmarathon.co.uk or send application forms to Chippenham Half Marathon, c/o Sports Systems, Regency House, 61 Walton Street, Walton on Hill, Tadworth KT20 7RZ. It costs £17 for unaffiliated runners and £15 affiliated. Profits will go to the Wiltshire Air Ambulance.
