Large chunks of concrete described as being ‘half the size of a dog cage’ were spotted scattered across a major Wiltshire road.
The debris on the busy A3102 - close to the Churchill pub near Royal Wootton Bassett - was reported just after 6am on Wednesday, October 11.
This stretch of road, which connects Bassett to the M4, is used by thousands of motorists each day.
Councillor Jacqui Laywas informed of the danger by her daughter and then reported the issue to Wiltshire Police and Wiltshire Council.
“I was up at 5.30am seeing off my daughter as she has to go to Poole to catch the ferry, and she rang in when she stopped at Membury to tell me about the debris that she faced passing through Royal Wootton Bassett,” said Coun Lay.
“I don't know how much debris there was but apparently one piece was quite big - potentially half the size of a dog cage,” she added.
The councillor was particularly concerned that many drivers might not see the large debris scattered across the road when driving while it was still dark.
“I was surprised that by the time I got through to Wiltshire Council after dealing with the police, it had not been reported by anyone else,” the councillor added.
The councillor said she was first made aware of the issue at 6.10am and attempted to report it to the police and Wiltshire Council straight away, but says she didn’t get off the phone until 6.50am.
"Police were there before 7am sweeping debris off the road," one onlooker said.
Coun Lay urged motorists: “I'm just glad the debris has been cleared up by now. If you see a problem on the highway that is a danger to others please report direct to the police if you can."
