A pupil from Royal Wootton Bassett is putting Wiltshire on the map after becoming a European record holder.

Aidan Grainger, a student at Royal Wootton Bassett Academy, has become the national and European record holder for ‘speedcubing’ the ‘Megaminx.’

The Megaminx is part of the Rubik’s cube family and functions in a similar way to a Rubik’s cube but is dodecahedron-shaped.

Over 200,000 speedcubers took part in the World Cube Association official competition held on Sunday, November 19, 2023, but it was Wiltshire's own who came out on top.

Aidan set the record of 31.41 seconds, which made him not just a European record holder but also the 9th fastest in the world.

“I’m really proud to have achieved this record because it is something I have been trying to achieve for a long time now,” said Aidan.

“I’m hoping in the future that I can improve even more and break the world record.

“With my exams coming up, I may need to practice a little less, but it does relax me and it helps me think so I will just keep it up,” he added.

Celebrating the big win, Anita Ellis, headteacher at Royal Wootton Bassett Academy, said: “I had to research what a Megaminx was when I found out and I was doubly impressed.

“All of us at Royal Wootton Basset Academy are incredibly proud of Aidan for the hard work and dedication to receive his title. He’s a credit to Royal Wootton Bassett.”
