Suspected burglars are on the run after forcing their way into the home of an elderly man.

Wiltshire Police are now investigating the incident which saw more than one suspect make off with cash and old watches belonging to a 90-year-old resident.

At around 3.50pm on Tuesday, January 23, burglars targeted a property in Snarlton Lane, Melksham, where it is thought they gained access by smashing their way through the victim's back gate.

The gate backs onto the playing field and school near Cranesbill Road.

a Wiltshire Police spokesperson said: "We are appealing for anyone who witnessed any suspicious behaviour or saw anyone running away from the Snarlton Lane direction to please get in touch with us.

"If you can help, contact us via our website or on 101 quoting reference 54240008565."

In October 2022 Wiltshire Police issued a public commitment to attend and investigate all burglaries in the county.

This followed damning figures published by the The Times that showed that in the 12 months previously there were 1,103 domestic burglaries reported to Wiltshire Police, but only 28 people were charged.

During the announcement of the commitment, Assistant Chief Constable Craig Dibdin said: "We are determined to bring more criminals to justice and support victims of such crimes.”
