Thousands turned out yesterday to cheer on runners of the first Chippenham Half Marathon in a decade.

More than 1,000 runners from all over the country took part in the revived half marathon to raise money for charity.

Organisers are thrilled with the success of the race, with almost 1,100 runners completing in under four hours.

Organiser Kevin Napier said: "The whole day was excellent with so many people turning up to take part and to support others.

"It was just fantastic with the weather staying fine for everyone.

"We were worried when we were setting up first thing because of the fog but that gradually cleared ready for the start of the race.

"It turned out to be great for everyone and we are so pleased with the support on the day."

The event, which was sponsored by the Gazette and Herald, Goughs Solicitors, Knorr-Bremse, Westaff, Acones Traffic Management, BBC Radio Wiltshire, the Packaging People and Earth's Image, is hoped to become an annual event due to the success yesterday.

Mr Napier added: "We have been discussing whether the event will become annual and we hope from this year's success that this will happen."

There was plenty for both spectators and runners on the day from kids entertainment with the Gazette and Herald bouncy castle and mascot Gilbert to a wide range of refreshments at and around Chippenham Sports Club, where the race began.

Chippenham Sports Club steward and manager, Andy Thatcher, said: "It was a brilliant day. The support was great with more than 2,000 people watching for their loved ones to finish.

"The entertainment on the day went down well also with the Gazette and Herald bouncy castle for the kids and all of the stalls run by the sponsors.

"It was a fantastic event. I'm sure the event will be done again with even more runners. I think we could cope with 2,000 runners easily."
