FORMER Swindon Town player Dave Hockaday has been appointed as the new manager of Blue Square Premier side Forest Green Rovers.

The 51 year old, who made more than 650 appearances during his 20-year playing career with Town, Blackpool, Hull City, Stoke City and Shrewsbury Town, will take charge at the Gloucestershire side, who are struggling near the foot of the table.

Hockaday set up the Cirencester Football Academy, the forerunner of many similar schemes in the country and developed current England star Ashley Young during a spell running Watford's academy.

In 2007 he had a brief spell with MK Dons, under the now-Cheltenham Town manager Martin Allen before joining Southampton in the Championship.
