CALLING all caravanners and campers... there is a little known secret about the Savernake Forest campsite tucked away at the top of Postyern Hill on the Burbage road out of Marlborough.

It is one of a handful of sites open right through the winter months offering visitors the chance to visit Marlborough with their tents and caravans all year round instead of just in the warmer months.

The Postern Hill site was formerly run by the Forestry Commission but along with 20 others in the UK, became part of Forest Holidays, run in partnership with the Camping and Caravan Club.

Thankfully for cold weather campers, the site has plenty of electric hook-ups providing power for heaters, TVs and other appliances. However its facilities are minimal with a toilet block but no washing or shower facilities.

The site is in Savernake Forest and is surrounded by woodland although it is just a 10-minute walk from the centre of town and is within a short car journey of some of the most beautiful and historic landscape in the West of England.

It is a haven for wildlife of all sorts from deer to birds and even historic trees like the Bib Belly oak that is more than 1,100 years old.
