AS HE adapts to life in the Football League with Swindon Town, John Goddard is aiming to modernise his game by becoming as flexible as possible.

The 23-year-old earned his move to League One after scoring 20 goals from 49 appearances in all competitions for National League outfit Woking, with his impressive haul coming from a host of different midfield positions.

Since joining Town, Goddard has sometimes been deployed in an offensive role just behind Swindon’s front line but during his side’s last two matches – a win on the road at Oldham Athletic and home defeat to Northampton Town – the former Reading trainee has been somewhat more withdrawn.

Goddard has found himself plying his trade in a more traditional central midfield role but being shifted around positionally holds no fears for the ex-Cards man.

“I have played centre midfield before and I think more and more players in the modern game are versatile players,” Goddard told BBC Wiltshire.

“You see yourself rotating on the pitch. Sometimes you end up left side, sometimes you end up dropping back to get the ball, and you can look like you are playing different positions anyway.

“I don’t worry too much about where my position is because wherever I play, I just go out and try to do my best and contribute to the team.”

Goddard also says that he’s far from pleased to see Swindon lingering towards the lower reaches of the table but is sure that the outlook could easily change for the better.

He said: “I can only speak for myself and when you see the table, you just get disappointed.

“You don’t want to be down there, I’m not going to lie.

“It’s early days and the league table is so tight.

“It’s very volatile. You get one win and you are right back moving forwards.

“The consistency is the main thing we need. Again, if you can get a few wins consecutively it really helps.”

Meanwhile, Michael Doughty says that he will be returning to Swindon on Monday as he continues his recovery from appendicitis surgery.

The influential Queens Park Rangers loanee has missed Town’s last five matches following a ‘complication’ during his recent procedure.

He tweeted: “Will be back in Swindon Monday to begin road to full fitness.”
